Canadian resume format: how to adapt your resume for Canada
Last reviewed 2026-10-12
A Canadian resume is one to two pages on Letter-size paper, tailored to the job and focused on measurable results. Leave off your photo, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Add the Canadian equivalent of your degree from your ECA, include relevant volunteer work, and write every bullet so a Canadian recruiter can see how it transfers to the role.
What a Canadian resume looks like
- One to two pages, Letter size (8.5 × 11 in).
- Canadian spelling: colour and centre, but organize and recognize.
- Contact details: name, phone, email, city and province, LinkedIn.
- A short summary of qualifications naming the role you want.
- Experience newest first with month and year and results-led bullets.
- Education with the Canadian equivalent, then skills, certifications, languages and volunteer experience.
Leave these off
Federal and provincial human rights laws prohibit hiring discrimination based on age, race, place of origin, religion, marital and family status and other grounds, so Canadian employers do not expect, and often avoid, resumes that include them.
- Photo
- Date of birth or age
- Marital status, children, religion
- Nationality, passport or SIN numbers
- Full home address (city and province is enough)
The "Canadian experience" problem
Many newcomers hear that they lack Canadian experience. The Ontario Human Rights Commission says a strict requirement for Canadian experience is discrimination unless an employer can show it is a genuine need of the job. You can also close the gap yourself: name the outcome, the scale and the tools in terms a Canadian recruiter recognizes, list volunteer or contract work done in Canada, and mention Canadian certifications you hold or are completing.
Conversion checklist
- Pick one target role and keep the experience that supports it.
- Switch to Letter size and Canadian spelling.
- Add one line of context for each employer abroad: sector, size, what they do.
- Turn duties into results with numbers, converting money to Canadian dollars where it shows scale.
- State the Canadian equivalent of your degree from your ECA (for example "WES ECA: Bachelor’s degree").
- Add a line on work authorization if you have one ("Permanent resident" or "Open work permit until 2028").
- Use plain headings and one column so applicant tracking systems read it correctly.
- Save as PDF unless the posting asks for Word.

How long should a resume be in Canada?
One to two pages. Two is normal for experienced candidates; longer CVs are only for academic and medical roles.
Should I include a photo on a Canadian resume?
No. Canadian employers avoid photos, age and marital status because human rights laws prohibit hiring decisions on those grounds.
Does Canada use CV or resume?
Resume, for most jobs. CV is used for academic, research and medical roles, as in the US.
Can employers require Canadian experience?
In Ontario, the Human Rights Commission says a strict Canadian-experience requirement is discriminatory unless the employer can show it is a genuine requirement of the job. Rules differ by province.
