Visa sponsorship jobs: how to find US employers that sponsor

Last reviewed 2026-10-12

Employers that sponsor work visas leave a public record: every H-1B petition starts with a Labor Condition Application, and USCIS publishes approvals by employer in its H-1B Employer Data Hub. Search a company there before you apply, read the posting for "sponsorship" language, and prioritize cap-exempt employers such as universities, which can file H-1B petitions without the lottery.

The visas employers sponsor most

  • H-1B: for specialty occupations that need at least a bachelor’s degree. Most new H-1Bs go through an annual lottery; universities and their affiliated nonprofits, and nonprofit or government research organizations, are cap-exempt and can file at any time.
  • F-1 OPT and STEM OPT: not sponsorship in the visa sense, but employers must be willing to hire you; STEM OPT extensions require an employer enrolled in E-Verify.
  • TN: for eligible Canadian and Mexican professionals under the USMCA, with no lottery.
  • O-1: for people with extraordinary ability, with no lottery.
  • Green card (PERM labor certification): a longer employer-led process, often started after you join.

Check a company’s sponsorship history

  1. Search the employer in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub to see approvals by year.
  2. Look up Labor Condition Applications in the Department of Labor’s disclosure data to see job titles and wages they filed for.
  3. If the company sponsored the same kind of role recently, it is a strong target. If it has no history, it may still sponsor, but ask early.

Read the posting

"Must be authorized to work in the US without sponsorship now or in the future" means the employer will not sponsor. "Sponsorship available" or "we support visa transfers" means it will. Silence means you should ask the recruiter directly, early, and in one line.

Remote does not remove the requirement. A US-based remote job still requires US work authorization. A "work from anywhere" contract role with a foreign company is a different arrangement, not a path to a US visa.

Already on an H-1B?

If you were counted against the H-1B cap before, a new employer’s petition generally does not go through the lottery again, which makes you much easier to hire. Say so in your first message to a recruiter: "I’m on an H-1B and need a transfer, no lottery required."

Common questions

How do I know if a company sponsors H-1B visas?

Search the company in the USCIS H-1B Employer Data Hub, which lists H-1B approvals by employer and year, and check Department of Labor Labor Condition Application data for the job titles they filed for.

Which employers can sponsor an H-1B without the lottery?

Cap-exempt employers: universities and their affiliated nonprofits, and nonprofit or government research organizations. Workers already counted against the cap can also usually change employers without a new lottery.

Do remote jobs sponsor visas?

A US-based remote job still requires US work authorization, so the employer must sponsor you the same way as for an office job. Remote work for a foreign company does not give you US work status.
